7 Places to Make Money from Your Unwanted Items

What to do after you adopt KonMari or the Minimalist Lifestyle?
Minimalism, Marie Kondo's Konmari method, tiny living, tidy up - these are all becoming super popular now, especially for those of us who move and travel often. Having less stuff (only the stuff you really love and need) makes it easier to do more of what you love, and not waste time or energy or space in your life on things that don't make you truly happy, the way that only experiences and connecting with people can :)
The challenge for many people can be figuring out what to do with all those items you decide you don't want or love or need anymore. Most people do not want to throw things out, and are reluctant to give them away to places like Goodwill or leave them in charity or donation boxes.
What do you do with something you love, but have to get rid of?
What do you do with something you recently bought, but don't have a use for?
What do you do with gifts that you won't use or wear?
Selling items used to take a lot of effort because you would have to take pictures, upload them to your computer, and then create listings on Craigslist or Kijiji.
Now it literally takes 30 seconds to list something with your iPhone or Android phone, and probably about another 2 minutes of messaging to figure out where you will meet someone to make the sale.
Here are my favourite places to go to after I've done a clean sweep. I used to do it just when I knew a trip or move was coming up, but now I have make it a regular habit to go to selling apps and sell used clothes online anytime I buy a new piece of clothing, and even when I am just doing the laundry.
I suggest downloading each of these apps and seeing which is most popular where you are located, and then listing your items there. I actually list my items on 3 of these apps because I find that I make sales with all of them, and I don't mind taking the extra couple minutes to post the items there.
This app is a bit laggy, but there's a ton of people using it in the Greater Toronto Area, so it's great to list your things here. You'll find listings of just about every household item and apparel on LetGo, so it's a good one to check out.
This app is pretty new, but it's cool because you can actually follow people's pages, so once you build up some followers, they'll get notifications any time you add something to your collection of items for sale. People list just about everything here, but it seems like most come to shop and look for apparel items.
3. Varage Sale
This one is probably my favourite when it comes to app UI because it makes it really easy to search for items, since everything is categorized by item type and even size. But I don't feel like there's quite as many people using the app in the Greater Toronto Area.
4. Facebook Groups or Marketplace
If you don't feel like downloading a new app, then definitely check out Facebook groups by searching your city name and "buy sell trade". I'm sure there will be at least one group that you can join and start posting in! There's also a Facebook Marketplace which you can check out, but how active it is will definitely depend on your location.
Poshmark is marketed as having higher-end brand clothing, so it's the right place to go if you had tons of brand name clothes that you want to sell and get rid of.
Mercari is similar to Varage Sale and Carousell. You'll find home items, clothing, vintage, electronics, and even handmade items listed here. I haven't tried it, but check it out, and comment what your think of it!
OfferUp has been around since 2012 and has some good ratings in the app store. actually lookst just about identical to Carousell, which makes me wonder...In any case, just check it out to see how popular it is in your exact location before you decide to dedicate time to listing your items.
The coolest part is that it's so easy that you can do it every time you do the laundry, or tidy up your place, or come home from shopping. So instead of spending hours listing a ton of stuff, you can just list items as you come across them. So easy!
Getting rid of stuff gives me an amazing feeling, and it's even better when I know that I am giving it to someone else who will get more joy out of it than me. Don't let items take up space and clutter your life, or end up in the garbage. Give them a new purpose !
